  • Elise Labau Topaloglu Why the Fearless Fund Settlement is a Strategic Win—But Headlines Say OtherwiseArian Simone, Founding Partner of Fearless Fund has gone out publicly (including on CBS Mornings with Gayle King) to explain why the settlement is a positive outcome for the fund and her work at-large. The main reasons are: 1) It is, in fact, just one grant program they have running; they will continue to deploy funds through their other programs. 2) The majority of the allocated funds for this program had already been deployed. But the real reason this is a win is that legally, they dodged a major bullet. As Ben Crum, a civil rights attorney who represented the Fearless Fund, said: “By strategically avoiding a Supreme Court ruling that could have eliminated race-based funding, we protected vital opportunities for the entire Black and brown community.”Yet, the headlines around this settlement are confusing at best and disastrous for optics—especially for the future of grants and VC funding not already committed to supporting underrepresented female founders. Here are a few of the headlines out there. With superficial understanding of the case, you'd think the entire fund is shutting down and its mission is being dismantled.🗞 Fearless Fund settles DEI fight and shuts down grant program for Black women (USA Today)🗞 Fearless Fund ends program for Black women, settling discrimination lawsuit (ABC News)🗞 A venture capital grant program for Black women officially ends after court ruling (NPR)🗞 Atlanta VC firm ends business grant for Black women after discrimination lawsuit (Atlanta Journal Constitution) 4 2 Comments
  • We Are Ideas Sponsors, foundations, and individual funders don't care as much about your cause as they do about your company/organization results. • Isaac Seliger Leaving aside the political aspects of this essay, it raises issues of great importance to #nonprofits. What we're telling our clients: no matter which party wins in Nov, funding streams will likely change fast. If the Democrats win, sentiments toward many progressive policies are changing + the `$37T deficit. If the Republicans win, things like the green new deal, subsidies for migrants, etc. will be dropped to address other priorities like awful educational outcomes, etc. + the $37T deficit. There'll still be vast amount of grants, but for new priorities. Very similar to 1980 when Reagan won and 1992 when Clinton won. Fasten your seatbelts! 3 1 Comment

  • Lawrence Aragon The world’s largest venture capital fundraisers are not immune from the fundraising downturn that has been especially hard on smaller and less established firms. Half of the firms on this year's VCJ 50 reported that their five-year fundraising totals declined or were about the same as they were for the previous fundraising period. Overall, the 50 largest VC fundraisers worldwide raised a combined $186.7bn, up slightly from $183.1bn in the previous period. As was the case for last year's ranking, Andreessen Horowitz was the top fundraiser, raking in $17.4bn in the five-year period, more than double the amount raised by General Catalyst, which ranked second on Venture Capital Journal's list. #vc #venturecapital #fundraisinghttps://lnkd.in/gsriH8cB 5 1 Comment

  • David Bank The week in impact investing: Political risk.🗣 ImpactAlpha endorses Kamala Harris. There, we said it. We don’t expect many readers to be surprised about where we stand. We have no illusions about swaying still-undecided voters or tipping swing states. And we appreciate that the impact investing community – our audience and our beat – has long sustained a rare level of bi- or even post-partisanship. Indeed, atlast week’s The Global Impact Investing Network's Impact Forumin Amsterdam and this week’s #SOCAP24 gathering in San Francisco, impact leaders largely sidestepped the impending US presidential election, at least in their public comments. In private, many shared shudders of dread before moving back to evergreen topics like climate solutions, sustainable development, diverse representation and systems change. But as the election nears, maintaining that sealed bubble feels at least naive, if not borderline complicit. Certain other publications have zigged away from making endorsements. We’ve chosen to zag: We believe the vice president represents the best choice for keeping open the path toward an impact economy, inclusive prosperity, a just transition and, ultimately, systemic change.Reams have been written about the candidates’ policy planks and party stakes in this election. Lists are being prepared for personnel to be promoted or purged in the various agencies, from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The outcome of the election will have specific implications across the whole range of impact investment priorities and strategies. But the systemic risks of the former guy’s return to power go beyond parties and policies(for a rundown, see Leadership Now’s “US political risk analysis“). https://lnkd.in/gb7SBxTaAnd even the persecution and prosecution promised byDonald Trumpand his proxies is less alarming than theanticipatory obedienceof so many supposed leaders. JUST Capital's latest surveysuggests Americans overwhelmingly agree executives have a role to play in addressing income inequality, gender and racial equity, and even the ethical use of AI. They are more iffy on CEOs’ responsibility, or perhaps ability, to protect our democracy. In the hopes that we don’t find out too late that the rule of law and thefreedom to investwere essential preconditions for positive impact after all, we endorseKamala HarrisandTim Walzin Tuesday’s election. https://lnkd.in/gpbiP8KN 44 4 Comments

  • Irina Tsukerman The latest The Washington Outsider #Report on @Coalition Radio episode is a story-within-a-story - and both are worth hearing. The guest is Mark Patinkin, a columnist for The Providence Journal who authored one of the first journalist accounts of post-October 7 reality, delving in understanding the human side of story from Israelis, particularly the South survivors of the #Hamas massacres, and the Palestinians in West Bank and #Gaza. Mark traveled around that area, went into #Gaza with the #IDF, but also interacted with Palestinians in person and with Gazans, via phone calls to get their side of the story. He relates powerful voices of the catastrophic impact of the #Hamas atrocities on the civilians and #Israel, and importantly, also focuses not only on the survivors from the families of those who were killed, but on the many wounded Israelis whose voices are not heard or forgotten by the media, because they survived. He also talks about the economy in the West Bank since the outbreak of the war, the relationship between #Gazans and #Hamas, and the prospects for a different future in the region. But the collection of the stories and his travels are just the beginning of the story, because then comes the censorship by the #Amazon which temporarily banned Mark's book along with another newly published account despite the fact that it is a balanced volume bringing together the different voices from the region. Eventually the books were released back on the market... but the publishing industry is rife with controversy and efforts to suppress even neutral voices, much less those who seek to humanize Israelis in any significant way.#MiddleEast #ArabWorld #Gaza #terrorism #counterterrorism #humanrights #Humanrightsaviolations #humanitariancrisis #Humanitarianaid #humanitarianassistance #warcrimes #military #security #defense #economy #foreignpolicy #foreignaffairs #diplomacy #geopolitics #censorship #freespeech #commerce #travel #traveljournalism #warjournalism #journalism #Amazon #booktalk 1

  • Sarabeth Berman The GivingTuesday Data Commons' 2023 Lookback Report shows a robust giving ecosystem, but U.S. nonprofits face ongoing declines in donor participation. The challenge is clear, but so is the opportunity.A sense of belonging is key to giving, yet 74% of Americans feel disconnected from their communities. At the @American Journalism Project, we see #localnews as a crucial connector within communities. When people are informed and feel a part of their community, they're more likely to contribute to its well-being. There is a silver lining: new donors increased by 2.3% in the U.S. — the first rise since 2021. But with donor retention down 3.5%, the report suggests U.S. nonprofits must double down on engaging current supporters and inviting a more diverse range of individuals into their support ecosystem.https://lnkd.in/eWd2xkXZ 18 1 Comment
